Ministry of Health PRO Under Fire for Comment About Nurses Who Missed Recruitment Slots, Says They Are “Not Smart”

The Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Health, Tony Goodman, has come under heavy criticism on social media following remarks allegedly made about nurses who were unable to secure slots during the ongoing recruitment exercise.

According to reports circulating online, the Ministry official reportedly suggested that nurses who failed to obtain slots on the recruitment portal were “not smart,” adding that they were therefore “dumb.” The comment has since sparked outrage among many health workers and members of the public.

The controversy comes at a time when thousands of nurses and midwives across Ghana have expressed frustration over the recruitment process. Applicants have complained about persistent technical difficulties, including portal crashes, slow system response, limited vacancies, and the inability to access the portal before available slots were exhausted.

Many affected applicants argue that the challenges were beyond their control, insisting that missing out on recruitment opportunities does not reflect incompetence or lack of intelligence.

Following the alleged statement, several social media users criticized the comment as insensitive and disrespectful to qualified health professionals who have spent years awaiting employment opportunities.

Some nurses also expressed disappointment, stating that public officials should show empathy and professionalism when addressing concerns affecting unemployed health workers.

The issue has continued to generate debate online, with many calling on authorities within the Ministry of Health to clarify the remarks and address the concerns surrounding the recruitment process.
