Teaching in Canada: How Much Can You Earn as a Teacher? — Counselor Jerry Akporhor Explains

Many Ghanaian teachers ask about salaries in Canada. Here’s how it works, based on information from Calgary and Edmonton — two of Canada’s major cities:

1. Starting Salary

Your starting pay depends on:

  • Years of postgraduate education (4 Years Bachelor’s, 1 or 2 Years Master’s, or multiple degrees)
  • Work experience

For someone just starting out:

  • With a 4-year degree: about CAD 61,293 per year (~CAD 5,000 per month)
  • With 6 years of education (e.g., 4 Years first degree plus 2 Years masters.): about CAD 68,995 per year (~CAD 5,750 per month)

2. Salary Progression

Teachers get annual increases for yearly experience. For example:

  • Year 1: CAD 68,000
  • Year 2: CAD 72,000
  • Year 3: CAD 76,000
  • Year 4: CAD 79,000

By Year 7–9: it’s possible to earn a six-figure salary, around CAD 101,000

3. Substitute Teacher Pay

A substitute teacher is someone who temporarily takes over a class when the regular teacher is absent, either for a day, a few days, or even longer. They follow the regular teacher’s lesson plans and manage the classroom, but their pay is usually on a daily or hourly basis.

Even if you start as a substitute teacher:

  • Daily rate: CAD 235/day (~CAD 39.70/hour)
  • Continuous contract (like for a month): CAD 339/day (~CAD 56.61/hour)

4. Consistency Across Canada

While pay might vary slightly between provinces or cities (e.g., Calgary vs. Edmonton), the difference is usually small (< CAD 500). Teachers’ salaries are generally “at par” across the country.

5. Benefits of choosing teaching in Canada

Stable government job

Paid vacation (long summer breaks, 4months)

Opportunities for advancement and higher pay with more experience

Bottom line: Teaching in Canada is financially rewarding. With the right qualifications and experience, you can secure a well-paying, stable job — even reaching six figures over time.
