GES Condemns Alleged Misconduct at Eastern Region Super Zonal Sports Competition

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has strongly condemned alleged incidents of misconduct that reportedly occurred during the just-ended Super Zonal Sports Competition held in the Eastern Region from 4th to 6th February, 2026.

In an official statement released on 11th February 2026, GES management confirmed receiving reports of an alleged stabbing and an alleged gang rape involving students during the competition. The Service described the reported incidents as deeply disturbing and emphasized that such behaviour has no place within the Ghana Education Service.

According to preliminary reports, a student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School was allegedly stabbed approximately 200 metres away from the competition venue while he had stepped out to have lunch with a friend. The victim was allegedly attacked by students of New Juaben Senior High School. He received medical treatment and has since been discharged from the hospital. One suspect has reportedly been arrested and is assisting the police with ongoing investigations.

In a separate incident, a female student of Osino Senior High School was allegedly raped in a bush at some distance from the competition grounds. Police have reportedly arrested two students in connection with the alleged incident, and they are currently in custody assisting with investigations. A third suspect, described as the alleged ringleader and a former student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School, is reportedly on the run.

GES indicated that the victim has received medical attention and is being provided counselling and psychosocial support by the Regional Guidance and Counselling Coordinator, the Head of the Girls’ Education Unit, and officers from the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU).

Management reiterated that inter-school sports competitions are intended to promote discipline, teamwork, unity, and talent development among students. It stressed that it is unacceptable for such events or related activities to be associated with violence, sexual abuse, or any form of criminal conduct.

The Ghana Education Service assured the public that all persons found culpable, following due process in accordance with the GES Code of Conduct on student behaviour, will be dealt with accordingly. The Regional Director of Education has reportedly been directed to apply appropriate sanctions to any schools found responsible, as a deterrent to similar occurrences.

GES further urged all stakeholders to remain calm and cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies as investigations continue.

The statement was signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations, Ghana Education Service.
