Does Failing the GTLE Exam Affect Your National Service? – What Every Teacher Trainee Needs to Know

On December 15, 2025, the National Teaching Council (NTC) officially released the results of the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) II. As expected, the portal experienced heavy traffic as thousands of candidates rushed to check their results.

While many have successfully accessed their scores, some are still trying due to system delays.

A key concern among candidates, especially those who unfortunately failed one or more papers, is whether their GTLE performance will affect their eligibility for national service.

  • The good news is: failing the GTLE does not affect your ability to do national service.

All qualified teacher trainees, regardless of their GTLE outcome, will still be allowed to undertake their national service. The GTLE is not a requirement for the national service process but is crucial during the recruitment phase.

This means that although you can still serve, you must pass the GTLE before being considered for employment into the Ghana Education Service (GES) or any public teaching role.

Candidates who didn’t pass are encouraged to prepare well and take advantage of the next available GTLE window to rewrite the papers they failed.

In summary:

  • You can do your national service even if you failed the GTLE.

  • But you must pass the GTLE to be recruited as a professional teacher afterward.

Stay calm, stay focused, and keep preparing!
