Over 80% of WASSCE 2025 Candidates Failed in At Least One Core Subject

The recently released WASSCE 2025 statistics have raised serious concerns about the state of Ghana’s education system.

A staggering number of students failed in at least one of the core subjects English Language, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science, or Social Studies.

When combined, these failures represent over 80% of candidates who could not pass at least one essential subject.

Breakdown of the failure rates:

- Core Mathematics – 220,008 students failed (50.54%)

- English Language – 131,097 students failed (30.27%)

- Integrated Science – 161,606 students failed (39.87%)

- Social Studies – 196,727 students failed (44%)

These are not just statistics; they reflect a deeper challenge within Ghana’s educational framework.

The fact that the majority of students are struggling with the very subjects meant to build foundational knowledge is alarming.

Core Mathematics and English are not only compulsory for further education, but they are also essential for life skills and employability.

Why is this happening

Several factors contribute to this crisis  inadequate teaching resources, limited access to learning materials, overloaded classrooms, lack of proper guidance, and in some cases, students' own learning habits. Rural-urban disparities, underpaid teachers, and technological gaps are making it even harder for students to perform well.

What must be done?

This calls for urgent reforms. Stakeholders must prioritize remedial programs, enhance teacher training, improve infrastructure, and ensure curriculum relevance. Most importantly, we must create learning environments that support and motivate students.

This is more than a national statistic  it’s a signal that we must act to protect the future of our youth and the development of our nation.
