ATTRICONs Petitions TTAG Over Increased Fees in Colleges of Education, Calls for Urgent Intervention

The Association of Teacher Trainees in Colleges of the Northern Sector (ATTRICONs) has petitioned the national leadership of the Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG) over what it describes as an exorbitant increase in fees in Colleges of Education across the country.

In a petition dated October 12, 2026, ATTRICONs expressed concern about the financial difficulties teacher trainees are facing following the recent increase in institutional fees. The association is calling on TTAG to intervene urgently and engage the relevant authorities to ensure that the concerns of teacher trainees are addressed.

The petition was addressed to the National President of TTAG in Accra, with ATTRICONs urging the national leadership to take decisive steps to secure a fair and sustainable resolution.

ATTRICONs Expresses Concern Over Increased Fees

According to the petition, the recent escalation in fees has created considerable anxiety and financial uncertainty among teacher trainees.

The association explained that many students are already struggling with the rising cost of living, transportation, food, learning materials and other essential educational expenses.

It further noted that a significant number of teacher trainees depend on financial support from their parents, guardians and other benefactors. The increased fees, therefore, place additional pressure on families who are already finding it difficult to finance tertiary education.

ATTRICONs warned that if the situation is not addressed promptly, it could negatively affect students' academic concentration, emotional well-being and ability to continue their education without interruption.

Financial Burden Could Affect Teacher Trainees' Education

The association highlighted several implications of the increased fees for teacher trainees across the country.

First, the additional financial burden could deepen the economic vulnerability of students from low-income and disadvantaged households. Some trainees may be forced to borrow money, sacrifice essential needs or seek alternative sources of financial support to meet their institutional obligations.

Second, the uncertainty surrounding the affordability of fees could contribute to frustration, emotional distress and reduced morale among students.

ATTRICONs also expressed concern that the rising cost of teacher education could discourage prospective applicants from pursuing the teaching profession, particularly those from financially disadvantaged backgrounds.

According to the association, such a development would undermine efforts to develop a competent and adequately prepared teaching workforce for national development.

ATTRICONs Calls for Transparency and Fairness

While acknowledging that Colleges of Education operate within administrative and financial frameworks that may require periodic reviews of institutional charges, ATTRICONs insists that any increase must be guided by transparency, fairness, affordability and meaningful consultation.

The association maintained that fee adjustments that impose unreasonable financial burdens on students without adequate communication, justification or support mechanisms deserve urgent reconsideration.

It further emphasised that the concerns of teacher trainees should not be treated merely as an administrative issue but as a matter involving student welfare, educational equity and the national interest.

Five Key Demands ATTRICONs Wants TTAG to Pursue

In the petition, ATTRICONs outlined specific measures it wants the national leadership of TTAG to pursue to address the concerns of teacher trainees.

1. Immediate Engagement With Relevant Authorities

ATTRICONs is calling on TTAG to initiate formal consultations with the Ministry of Education, the governing bodies of Colleges of Education and other relevant stakeholders.

The proposed engagement is expected to establish the basis for the increased charges and help identify a reasonable resolution.

2. Comprehensive Review of the Increased Fees

The association wants TTAG to advocate for a thorough review of the current fee structure, taking into account the prevailing economic conditions and the financial circumstances of the average teacher trainee.

ATTRICONs further stated that where the increases are found to be excessive or insufficiently justified, appropriate reductions or corrective measures should be considered to make teacher education reasonably accessible.

3. Transparency and Accountability in Fee Determination

ATTRICONs is also demanding clear explanations regarding the rationale, components and approval processes behind the increased fees.

According to the association, students deserve to understand the nature and purpose of the financial obligations imposed on them.

It believes that greater transparency would promote trust, accountability and mutual understanding between institutional authorities and the student body.

4. Protection of Financially Disadvantaged Students

The petition calls on TTAG to advocate for practical support mechanisms for students experiencing financial difficulties.

These measures could include:

  • Flexible payment arrangements.
  • Instalment-based payment schemes.
  • Extensions of payment deadlines.
  • Other feasible financial relief measures.

ATTRICONs believes that such interventions would provide temporary relief while discussions on the broader fee structure continue.

5. Timely Communication and Feedback

The association wants TTAG to keep teacher trainees informed about the progress of its engagements with the relevant authorities.

It argues that regular communication would help reduce uncertainty, discourage misinformation and reassure students that their concerns are receiving the necessary attention.

ATTRICONs Appeals to TTAG for Urgent Action

ATTRICONs has urged TTAG's national leadership to treat the petition with the seriousness and urgency it deserves.

The association believes that TTAG has the institutional standing and representative mandate to facilitate meaningful dialogue between teacher trainees and the relevant authorities.

It also clarified that its objective is not to undermine institutional administration or disregard legitimate financial considerations.

Rather, ATTRICONs is seeking a fair, transparent and equitable fee regime that balances the operational needs of Colleges of Education with the financial capacities and welfare of students.

The association expressed confidence that constructive engagement, mutual respect and a genuine commitment to student welfare could produce a solution that protects both the integrity of teacher education and the interests of teacher trainees.

The petition by the Association of Teacher Trainees in Colleges of the Northern Sector has brought renewed attention to concerns about the affordability of teacher education in Ghana.

By calling for a review of the increased fees, greater transparency and financial support for disadvantaged students, ATTRICONs is asking TTAG to take an active role in addressing the challenges confronting teacher trainees.

The association is hopeful that the national leadership of TTAG will engage the appropriate authorities and pursue practical measures to ease the financial pressure on students.

As teacher trainees await a response, the key issue remains whether the concerns raised in the petition will lead to meaningful discussions and measures to make teacher education more affordable and accessible.
