The Ghana Education Service (GES) is expected to reopen its teacher recruitment portal on November 15, 2026, to recruit an additional 8,000 teachers, according to Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu.
The upcoming recruitment exercise will be reserved exclusively for graduates of the 2023 cohort of teacher trainees, as the government seeks to address outstanding recruitment needs and ensure fairness in the selection process.
The Education Minister announced this during the 68th Anniversary Speech and Prize-Giving Day celebration of Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary (POJOSS) in Koforidua in the Eastern Region.
According to the Minister, the decision to allocate the additional vacancies to the 2023 graduating cohort is intended to correct what he described as an anomaly in the teacher recruitment process.
GES to Issue Appointment Letters to 7,000 Teachers
Before the November recruitment exercise begins, approximately 7,000 teachers who have successfully completed the merit-based selection process are expected to receive their appointment letters.
Mr. Iddrisu indicated that the successful applicants were expected to begin work on or before August 30, 2026.
The first phase is intended to facilitate the placement of applicants who have already gone through the recruitment process, while the subsequent exercise will create additional opportunities for eligible teacher trainees.
November Recruitment Reserved for 2023 Graduates
The Education Minister stressed that the additional 8,000 vacancies would be reserved solely for teacher trainees who graduated in 2023.
He explained that the decision was necessary to address an imbalance in the recruitment process and provide the affected graduates with an opportunity to secure employment within the public education system.
"I intend to use that to correct an anomaly. The 8,000 category will be for the 2023 graduating students teachers only," the Minister stated.
The announcement is expected to be significant for members of the 2023 cohort who have been awaiting an opportunity to be recruited into the Ghana Education Service.
Government to Consider 2024 Teacher Trainees
Mr. Iddrisu further disclosed that the government would consider another recruitment exercise for the 2024 batch of teacher trainees after completing the recruitment of the 2023 graduates.
This suggests that the government intends to address the recruitment needs of the affected cohorts in stages, although details regarding the timeline and number of vacancies for the 2024 batch have not yet been provided in the information available.
What Applicants Should Know
Eligible teacher trainees from the 2023 graduating cohort are expected to monitor official announcements from the Ghana Education Service regarding the reopening of the recruitment portal and the application process.
Applicants should also ensure that their academic and professional documents are available and that they rely on official GES communication for confirmation of the recruitment requirements.
The planned November 15, 2026, reopening is expected to provide an opportunity for the targeted graduates to apply for the additional teaching vacancies.
However, applicants should await official recruitment guidelines from the relevant authorities for further details about eligibility, documentation and the application procedure.
