The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has provided further information on the government’s plans to recruit teachers into the Ghana Education Service (GES), indicating that the recruitment process is expected to commence after the presentation of the 2027 Budget.
According to the Minister, the recruitment process is expected to begin in November 2026, with successful applicants expected to be posted and commence work in early 2027.
Mr. Iddrisu made the disclosure during an interview on TV3’s New Day programme with Roland on September 11, 2026, where he discussed several issues concerning Ghana’s education sector.
Recruitment to Focus on Teacher Cohorts
During the discussion, the Minister explained that the government is considering the different cohorts of trained teachers who have completed their programmes but are yet to secure employment.
He referred to the 2023, 2024 and 2025 teacher cohorts, explaining that when the recruitment portal is opened in November, attention will be given to the 2024 cohort, based on the assumption that the 2023 cohort has already been dealt with.
He further indicated that the 2025 cohort would be considered in the subsequent recruitment exercise.
The Minister acknowledged that advice he previously received regarding the recruitment of a particular category of teachers was not workable. However, he said the person who gave the advice was honorable enough to admit that he had gotten it wrong.
Mr. Iddrisu said he is now willing to work with what he described as solid advice concerning the order in which the teacher cohorts should be recruited.
10,000 Teacher Positions
The Minister’s comments come amid concerns from trained teachers and education stakeholders about the adequacy of the number of teachers expected to be recruited.
The proposed recruitment of 10,000 teachers has generated discussions over whether the number will be sufficient to address teacher shortages in schools across the country.
The actual number of positions to be filled, however, will depend on the financial resources available under the 2027 Budget.
Recruitment Expected to Lead to 2027 Postings
Based on the Minister’s explanation, the recruitment process is expected to follow the presentation and approval of the 2027 Budget, with the portal expected to open in November 2026.
Successful applicants could subsequently be posted to schools and begin work in early 2027.
Teacher applicants are therefore encouraged to follow official communications from the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education for details on eligibility, application procedures, available vacancies and the official opening of the recruitment portal.
Lincoln Media Resourcez Edu will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as official information becomes available.
