The Ghana Education Service (GES) has instructed all Regional Directors of Education to identify and declare overstaffed public basic and second-cycle schools as part of efforts to ensure the fair and equitable distribution of teachers across the country.
In a letter dated 8th July 2026 and signed by the Director-General of GES, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, Regional Directors have been directed to work with Metro, Municipal and District Directors to compile details of schools with excess teaching staff within their respective jurisdictions.
According to the directive, the exercise is aimed at addressing the uneven distribution of teachers by identifying schools that have more teachers than required. District Directors are expected to submit comprehensive information on excess teachers, including:
- Full names
- Staff identification numbers
- Teaching subject areas
- Any other required information using the attached reporting template
GES has instructed that the completed reports be submitted through the respective Regional Directors to the Office of the Director-General on or before Thursday, 23rd July 2026.
The Service emphasized that the cooperation and prompt attention of all education directors are essential to the successful implementation of the exercise.
The move is expected to help GES make informed decisions on teacher redistribution to improve staffing levels in underserved schools and promote equitable access to quality education across Ghana.
