Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu Confirms Abolishment of Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination Through Review

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has confirmed that the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) has been abolished through a new review process.

Speaking on 11th May, 2026, during the commissioning of a new office for the National Teaching Council in Tamale, the Minister explained that the decision fulfills a campaign promise made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to cancel the licensure examination.

According to him, the review has now integrated the Teacher Licensure Examination into the final year assessment process at the Colleges of Education. This means trainee teachers will no longer complete school and separately sit for the licensure examination before being certified.

Haruna Iddrisu further explained that under the new arrangement, 70% of the assessment will come from pedagogy, while 30% will be based on teaching practice.

The Minister expressed satisfaction with the new system, stating that it will help streamline teacher training and assessment in Ghana.
