NSS Allowance May Increase as NSA Continues to Push for GH¢1,200 Monthly Stipend

Thousands of National Service Personnel across Ghana may soon receive a significant boost in their monthly allowance as the National Service Authority (NSA) intensifies efforts to secure government approval for an increase from GH¢715 to GH¢1,200.

The proposed increment, if approved, is expected to ease the financial burden on graduates serving in schools, hospitals, government institutions, and private organizations across the country.

NSA Hopeful of 2026 Budget Approval

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, the Deputy Director-General of the National Service Authority, Fuseini Donkor, revealed that the Authority has officially submitted its proposal to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission for consideration.

According to Mr. Donkor, the NSA leadership remains optimistic that the proposed allowance increase will be captured in the 2026 National Budget, giving hope to thousands of service personnel who have long called for improved financial support.

> "They take GH¢715 per month, so we are hoping to increase it."

Proposal Was Missed in the 2025 Budget

Mr. Donkor acknowledged that although the proposal was not included in the 2025 National Budget, efforts to secure the increment have not stopped.

He emphasized that the Director-General, the Board Chairman, and the Authority's leadership are continuously engaging the relevant stakeholders to ensure the proposal receives the necessary approval.

> "Unfortunately, it wasn't captured in the 2025 budget. I know my DG and the Board Chairman are still pushing. We are hoping that in the 2026 budget, there could be a favour and grace on us," he stated.

Why the Increase Is Necessary

The current monthly allowance of GH¢715 has been heavily criticized by National Service Personnel, many of whom argue that it is no longer sufficient to meet the rising cost of living.

With increasing transportation fares, accommodation costs, food prices, and other essential expenses, many service personnel have appealed to the government to review the allowance to reflect current economic realities.

If approved, the proposed increase to GH¢1,200 would significantly improve the welfare of graduates undertaking their mandatory one-year national service and reduce the financial challenges they face while serving the nation.

Final Approval Still Pending

Despite the positive developments, the proposed allowance increment has not yet received final government approval. The proposal is still under consideration by the relevant authorities and is expected to form part of discussions leading to the presentation of the 2026 National Budget.

For now, National Service Personnel are being encouraged to remain patient as consultations continue between the National Service Authority (NSA), the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and the Government of Ghana.

Should the proposal receive approval, it would mark one of the most significant increases in the National Service allowance in recent years, bringing much-needed financial relief to thousands of graduates serving the country.
